JOURNAL EXERCISE
In your journal, write down some ways you’ve been a naysayer in life. What have you always wanted to do but been afraid to? Next, write about what would happen if you didn’t let fear hold you back but said yes to what your heart really wants. Try going out there and becoming a yaysayer!
CHAPTER 7
MODELS OF ENLIGHTENMENT
When I was living in New York, we’d go to Jones Beach when it opened on Memorial Day. We’d arrive on what was sure to be a hot day, as it often got up to 90 degrees on Long Island at the end of May. Now, if you want to see who most exemplifies no-limit people, look no further than the little children who had been locked up in their houses all winter. They knew this was the only water they were going to get to play in. If they didn’t take advantage of it, the closest they’d get would be the bathtub back home, like it had been all winter long.
The parents, on the other hand, would focus on the temperature of the water. There was ice in it just 30 days ago, they’d think. That’s going to be some cold water. They’d get there and obsess about that cold water, even though it was 85 degrees out, as they sat around and got their picnics together or what have you. The children would zoom right into the water and wouldn’t even notice that it was cold. Even if they got a little blue, they didn’t care. They were in the water, at the beach, and it was fun and exciting for them. They didn’t tell themselves how awful it was going to be, or even think cold thoughts. They were having the best time!
The parents were supposedly there to have a good time too, but here’s how they’d talk: “Look at those kids, swimming in the water when it’s still May. I can’t believe how crazy they are.” But who was crazy? The children were free and spirited and enjoying themselves, while the parents’ narrative kept them from being able to enjoy that day, that moment, that special set of circumstances.
Children instinctively know the power of a good attitude. They know that if you expect to enjoy a fun day at the beach, then that’s exactly what you will do. You can capture the spirit of unspoiled, creatively alive, excited-about-everything children even now, simply by allowing that little boy or girl inside of you to come out.
